The downdraft gas kiln is built to a design by Michael Casson, and is about 2’x2’x2’ or 8 cubic feet altogether, and uses propane gas.
In its original form it was reluctant to fire in oxidation, although it fired in reduction very well.
On the advice of Frank and Janet Hamer, I increased the size of the flue, and this did the trick. It now fires well under both oxidation and reduction conditions.
It fires to 1280C in about 8 hours, and cools to room temperature in about 24 hours.
The photos show the inside of the kiln, and the construction of the new flue. The flue internal size is now about 3.5” x 7”.
This kiln itself does not need an external flue pipe, although I use one to pipe the exhaust out of the kiln shed.
